CITY HALL — A laborer with the Streets and Sanitation Department who stole $10,000 by forging city payroll checks has been fired, the city's watchdog announced Tuesday.

The laborer, who was not named in Inspector General Joe Ferguson's quarterly report released Tuesday, managed to steal approximately $10,000 over five months, officials said.

The laborer gave the fake checks to three accomplices, who cashed the checks and shared the cash with the city employee, according to the report. The others involved were not employed by the city, the report said.

Two men involved in the scheme were convicted, according to the report.

The laborer was terminated, and later agreed to resign. The employee has been placed on the city's "do-not-hire" list, according to the report.
