PORTAGE PARK — A man tried to lure a 10-year-old boy walking home from school Tuesday afternoon in Portage Park, police said.

The boy and two of his friends had stopped at a BP gas station store in the 3600 block of north Laramie Avenue near Addison Street just before 3:30 p.m. when the incident occurred.

The store is just a few blocks away from Gray Elementary School, 3730 N. Laramie Ave., and St. Bartholomew School, 4941 W. Patterson Ave.

While his friends went into the store to buy something, the boy waited outside. A man driving a purple van pulled up to the curb outside the store and told the boy "come here" and pointed to the inside of the van, police said.

The boy ran inside the gas station store and the man drove away, south on Laramie Avenue, police said.

Police described the man as white or Hispanic, approximately 30 years old, with short black hair and a mustache. He wore a dark gray sweatshirt and jeans. The purple van featured a Ram symbol, and could be a Dodge, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 312-744-8200.
