NORWOOD PARK — The Chicago chapter of the Thomas Merton Society will discuss the tradition of contemplation in Catholicism at an event at Immaculate Conception Parish.

Tony Sorgi, a lifelong student of contemplative practice, will discuss Merton's desire to deepen his relationship with God with the society at 2 p.m. Sunday at Immaculate Conception Parish, 7211 W. Talcott Ave.

Titled Awakening Sacred Heart: Merton’s Quest to Revive Catholic Contemplation, Sorgi will focus on Merton's "relentless pursuit of his beloved, the God deeper in us than we are ourselves," organizers said.

The society is dedicated to promoting the work of Merton — an American Catholic writer, monk, poet and social activist — who would have celebrated his 100th birthday in 2015.

Admission is free, although a $5 donation is requested, and refreshments will be served.
