CHICAGO — It's autumn, and for the city's Department of Streets and Sanitation, that means it's time for a refresher on how to properly dispose of yard waste.

Starting on Oct. 17 and continuing through Nov. 30, the city will keep trucks at the ready to collect bags of leaves and other natural debris by request, officials announced Monday. The bags will be taken away and composted, separate from other trash or recycled materials.

Residents with yard waste should call 311, and a DSS truck will come directly to pick up any waste left on their curb or alley.

Last year, the department launched an extensive public information campaign to keep people from throwing their leaves in the trash.

The department will continue street sweeping operations through the fall, officials said, but they encourage residents to keep curb lanes and storm drains clear of leaves.
