UPTOWN — CPS is juggling a variety of issues with a looming Chicago Teachers Union strike, lower enrollment and budget cuts that have lead to layoffs, but what does that mean for the neighborhood?

A comparison of last year's 20th-day enrollment, as reported by CPS, and this year's 10th-day enrollment, shows all of Uptown's neighborhood schools' enrollments are down. Across the city, public school enrollment dropped by 3.5 percent this year, according to information provided by the CPS.

In total, the neighborhood's five elementary schools and Uplift High School lost about 220 students. During the last 10 years, enrollment has fallen 6.8 percent at public schools in Chicago, with half of that drop since September 2015, according to district enrollment data.

In all, Chicago schools have seen their budgets slashed by $170 million since September 2015, according to CPS data.

Because of enrollment drop, CPS officials laid off 134 teachers and 103 members of schools' support staffs earlier this week.
