BEVERLY — A 20-year-old man died after lying down in front of an oncoming Metra train in Beverly Monday night, officials said.

Around 10 p.m., a southbound train was running on the Rock Island Line near 99th Street when the engineer spotted a man walking toward the tracks with his head down, Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said.

The engineer sounded the train's horn, but the man walked faster and lay down on the tracks, Reile said. The engineer applied emergency brakes, but the man was struck, Reile said.

The man was pronounced dead at 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. His home address was listed in suburban Evergreen Park.
