No Armed Robber Found After SWAT Team Responds To West Loop Dunkin Donuts

By Joe Ward | September 30, 2016 2:28pm | Updated on October 3, 2016 8:43am

CHICAGO — A Police Department SWAT team responded to a West Loop Dunkin Donuts Friday after hearing that an armed robber had barricaded himself inside, but no robber was found, police said.

Officers received a call of an armed robbery at Dunkin Donuts, 555 W. Lake St. at 12:42 p.m., police said.

Police treated it as a possible barricade situation, and a SWAT team was deployed, but officers did not find anyone posing a threat after entering the building, police said.

No injuries have been reported, police said. No arrests were made, police said.

Police could not say if the armed robbery did occur.

A witness said he saw a man run out of the Dunkin Donuts after hearing screams come from the donut shop.

Kevin Thompson was on his way to an appointment at CTA headquarters next door to the Dunkin Donuts when he heard a woman scream.

"The lady was running out of the building," he said. "She dropped her coffee."

A man in a dark sweatshirt ran out of the Dunkin Donuts after the lady. Thompson said he thought he was the robber, since he ran out of the shop and down the alley immediately west of the store.

Thompson said he figured another robber must have remained inside the Dunkin Donuts, given the police presence at the shop. But no such person was found inside.

The SWAT team came in moments later, Thompson said.
