SAUGANASH — Chicago police and U.S. Secret Service agents are investigating vulgar graffiti painted on the headquarters of the Polish National Alliance before Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump spoke there Wednesday.

The graffiti, which used an epithet in Polish and specifically mentioned Trump, had been removed before the businessman arrived in Sauganash just after 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Chicago Police Communications Director Anthony Guglielmi said the department sent detectives to the Polish National Alliance headquarters, 6100 N. Cicero Ave. to assist the Secret Service, which is charged with protecting the candidates and high-ranking governmental officials.

The candidate did not mention the graffiti incident but did seem to be impressed with the Alliance headquarters.

"Coming to this building and seeing how well organized this building is, how beautiful, how clean and how you open it up to the community...I just want to [congratulate] you and I want to thank you," Trump said.

Trump's visit to the city was a closely held secret: The Trump campaign did not respond to questions Tuesday from DNAinfo about whether the candidate planned to visit the Chicago less than two days after decrying Chicago's violence and likening it to a "war-torn country."

Trump was greeted by several dozen protesters near Cicero and Peterson avenues holding anti-Trump signs condemning his promise to deport undocumented immigrants and supporting Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's pledge to enact immigration reform.

About a half-dozen Trump supporters also greeted the candidate, waving Polish and American flags as his multi-car motorcade rolled down Cicero Avenue.
