CHICAGO — A shooting in Gage Park left Jose Ernesto Martinez, 30, dead Monday night, police said.
At 6:40 p.m., Martinez was in the 5100 block of South Washtenaw Avenue when he was shot, said Officer Laura Amezaga, a Chicago Police spokeswoman. He was hit in his chest and upper armpit.
Martinez was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was in "very critical" condition, Amezaga said.
Martinez, of the 5100 block of South Washtenaw, was pronounced dead at 7:11 p.m., according to Cook County Medical Examiner's Office records. An autopsy showed he died from multiple gunshot wounds in a homicide.
He was a documented gang member, police said.
No one was in custody.
