WICKER PARK — A 23-year-old man was wounded in a Wicker Park shooting early Monday, according to police.

The man was sitting in the backseat of a car at 3:30 a.m. in the 2000 block of West Pierce Avenue when shots rang out, according to Officer Bari Lemmon, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

Lemmon said the man "heard shots and felt pain in his chest."

He was shot in his right torso and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was not released but police considered the man to be stable.

Around 6 a.m. Monday, an alley just west of the Damen and Pierce intersection was roped off with police tape.

Police said that shell casings and a gun were discovered where the man says he was shot.

Several blocks south of the alley where the shots were fired, there was additional police activity at the corner of Damen Avenue and Rice Street, where police on the scene said the shooting victim's car had been stopped by police who had heard the shots and followed the silver Chevy Equinox.

The shooting victim, who was riding in the Equinox with three other people, is a documented gang member, police said.

No one is in custody. Area North detectives are investigating.
