Chicago Man On FBI 'Most Wanted' List Captured In Mexico

By Alex Nitkin | September 23, 2016 1:41pm

CHICAGO — A man accused of murder and sexual assault in Chicago was captured in Mexico Thursday, four years after he was placed on the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted" fugitive list, U.S. officials announced Friday.

Urbina, 41, was arrested by Chicago Police and charged with "kidnapping, brutally beating and raping" a woman in 1998, according a notice released by the FBI's Chicago branch. After Urbina was released on bond, he was suspected of "bludgeoning to death" a 22-year-old woman and abandoning her body in Gage Park.

Urbina then fled, and a federal warrant was issued for his arrest, officials said.

He was added to the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted" fugitives list in 2012, according to the Tribune.

Mexican federal police captured Urbina Thursday outside Valle de Zaragoza in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, officials said.

American leaders will try to extradite Urbina to the United States, where he would face trial in Cook County, according to an FBI spokesman.

Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson credited the arrest with strong cooperation among law enforcement at all levels.

"Mr. Urbina's capture should serve as a warning to violent offenders what can be accomplished through the combined weight of federal, state, and local law enforcement efforts," Johnson said.
