EDGEWATER — The first weekend of fall in Edgewater is set to kick off with two of the neighborhood's biggest annual events: the annual fall arts fest and a 5K run/walk that benefits local schools.

From 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, the Edgewater Arts Festival runs along Granville Avenue showcasing more than 100 artists, a beer garden with food vendors, three stages for live performances, an area for kids activities, pet parade and more.

The festival is now in its fourth year and includes talent drawn from the neighborhood, as well as across the city.

Also Sunday is the Back To School 5K Run/Walk, which sends $5 from each registration to a local school of the participant's choosing. The cost of the 5K is $40 per runner, and $35 for the mile walk, though individuals and businesses may also opt to sponsor student runners for $25 each.

At 8 a.m., the 5K steps off, followed by a shorter 1-mile walk at 8:05 a.m. and both start at the St. Ignatius Community Plaza at Rosemont and Kenmore Avenues. At 8:45 a.m., mascots from neighborhood middle schools and Loyola University race against each other.

The Edgewater Chamber of Commerce said it hopes to sign up at least 800 participants this year, and 185 students have already been sponsored by community members.

Leading up to the event, the Fireside Restaurant, 5739 N. Ravenswood Ave., will donate 3 percent of its sales to local schools, the Chamber said.

Finishing the race has other perks too: a pancake breakfast will be ready for hungry runners and walkers, and those over 21 will get a free beer.
