ANDERSONVILLE — A Peirce Elementary School teacher is raising money to provide diverse learners in her classroom "with the tools they need to succeed."

The Donor's Choose project, created by Caitlin Bencel, a second grade teacher at the school at 1423 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., aims to raise $1,070 to fund tools for her 25 students by the end of the year.

"My students need special sensory tools in order to reach their full potential in a safe and comfortable environment," Bencel wrote in the description on the Donor's Choose project. "I have created this project to provide my students with the opportunity to have a positive learning experience and do the best they can do."

The money raised will be used to purchase wobble stools and cushions, resistance bands, weighted blankets, headphones, Twist'N Write pencils and visual timers.

Stools, cushions and fidget-friendly gadgets "will help active students refocus their attention by providing a quiet, kinesthetic outlet to release extra energy, frustration, and anxiety," Bencel said.

Visual timers "will aid students by keeping them on task, making transitions more manageable, and promoting independence," according to the project's website.

Bencel will only receive the funds if the project is completely funded by Dec. 29.
