AUBURN GRESHAM — Ald. David Moore (17th) said he is excited to see a new Dollar Tree opening in the ward.

Economic development has always been a top priority for Moore, he said, and seeing new businesses come into the community is always a good thing.

“We need more companies to commit to locating in South Side communities,” Moore said.  “We spend millions of dollars that never turn over once in our neighborhoods.”

The new Dollar Tree opened this month at 7522 S. Ashland Ave. It has 30 employees and about 60 percent of them live in the 17th Ward and surrounding communities.

The store's Regional Director Dawn Martinez said hiring in the community is important.

“From a customer-service perspective, hiring in the community helps us be able to connect to those customers who live in the neighborhood," she said. "And in terms of growth, those who live in the area are given an opportunity to expand and develop in their communities, which is important."

She added: “The 17th Ward is a terrific location from a population density standpoint, and the location will serve the community's needs."

Residents like Keisha Norris, 35, welcome the new store.

“Having a Dollar Tree store in the ward gives us the opportunity to shop in our own neighborhood," she said. "It also is an example of a growing business in the community. This creates and encourages optimism for other growing businesses and people who want to start their own community businesses, like myself.”

Resident Reginald Haywood said the Dollar Tree will help generate revenue and boost the economy.

“The economy is the biggest problem we’re facing,” he said.
