WICKER PARK — If you can resist the smells of doughnuts wafting from downstairs, the sound of the CTA Blue Line "L" train pulling in and out of the Damen station and can handle the monthly rent of $2,800, a loft in the heart of Wicker Park could be yours.

Located at 1562 N. Damen Ave., the 3-story building anchored by Stan's Donuts was constructed in 1889 and has an "incredibly interesting and robust history," according to the property's co-owner Mackenzie Maher.

Available now, the 1,500 square-foot loft features three bedrooms, hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances, in-unit washer and dryer and a garbage disposal, according to a Craigslist listing, which describes it as being located in the "the epicenter of all things cool & hip."

"It has been everything from a brothel to a drug den. We have done much to help rehab the building and get nice tenants," Maher said.

In addition to its notorious past, the building decades ago was targeted by the city because its apartments were "unfit for human habitation," the Tribune reported.

According to a July 21, 1982 Tribune story, 16 apartments above what was then called "EL's Snack shop" were shut down by the city for health and building code violations.

Take a look at the photos below and see how much the apartments have improved in recent years.
