DOWNTOWN — The Madison Street entrance to Union Station has been partially reopened after falling concrete caused its closure Thursday, Amtrak announced.

The middle stairwell at the Madison Street station has been reopened, though the other stairwells are closed, Amtrak said in a statement Friday. The middle stairwell leads to tracks No. 9 and 11 (track 9 was shut down Thursday due to the closure).

There is no word on when the remaining stairwells will open.

The closure comes the same week that falling concrete in the station injured passengers, according to media reports.

A spokeswoman for Amtrak said the entrance was being closed out of "an abundance of caution."

"The remaining two stairwells closed so that inspections may continue to verify the integrity of the non-railroad owned structure above the tracks," Amtrak said in a statement.

Metra passengers should use entrances on either Adams, Jackson, Canal or Clinton, the company said. Additional time may be needed to reach your boarding platform.
