CHICAGO — A retired Chicago Police commander was shot and wounded in South Chicago on Wednesday, according to reports.

About 10 a.m., a 73-year-old man was in the 8200 block of South Essex Avenue when he was shot in his shoulder, said Officer Laura Amezaga, a Chicago Police spokeswoman. The man was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where his condition was not available, but he was listed as "stable," Amezaga said.

A 21-year-old man, who was also shot, was taken into custody, Amezaga said. The man was hit in his leg and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition was not available but he was listed as "stable," Amezaga said.

The 73-year-old victim was a retired Chicago Police commander, according to Chicago Tribune reporter Peter Nickeas. Police could not immediately confirm that and could not say how the 21-year-old man was wounded.

The shooting was under investigation and no further information was immediately available, Amezaga said.
