LAKEVIEW — A shooting victim who told police he was hit in a "possible drive-by" near the Belmont Red Line station actually shot himself, officials said.

The 22-year-old man walked into Illinois Masonic Hospital at 4:40 a.m. Tuesday and said he was shot in the 1000 block of West Belmont Avenue, police said

Detectives found no evidence of a shooting on the block like a gunshell or video footage of the incident — despite there being a police blue-light camera at the intersection of Belmont and Sheffield and private cameras in nearby businesses, officers noted. Police also said there were no calls to 911 for shots fired at the time.

The victim, who was shot in his buttocks, had no bullet holes in his clothing, police said. Video surveillance footage showed the man getting dropped off from a car matching the description the man had given          of the alleged shooter's vehicle.

The man was also arrested after detectives found an active warrant issued for a probation violation. Police also said the man is a documented gang member.
