CITY HALL — Mayor Rahm Emanuel called Hillary Clinton as "one tough cookie" as she recovered from pneumonia this week.

"I've seen how strong and tough she can be," Emanuel said in a news conference Wednesday after a City Council meeting. "This is one tough person who's got the grit and determination and judgment to be president of the United States."

Emanuel said he had dealt with the Democratic presidential candidate as a congressional colleague and as chief of staff to President Barack Obama when she served as secretary of state.

"I know that she'll make a speedy recovery," Emanuel said.

Asked about the presidency being a "grueling" job, Emanuel said being first lady, U.S. senator and secretary of state also were all grueling jobs.

"She is a tough person and measures up physically, intellectually and judgment-wise to the job and all that's required of it 24/7," Emanuel said, adding that he expected her to quickly return to the campaign trail.
