EDGEBROOK — A special Mass and ceremony at St. Mary of the Woods School will mark the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, officials said.

For the third year in a row, the Edgebrook Catholic church and school will remember the first responders and civilians who were killed in the terrorist attacks, while honoring law enforcement officers and members of the military during a special Mass and ceremony set to start at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the church, 6955 N. Hiawatha Ave.

"Firefighters, police officers, soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, nurses, doctors and so many more are uniform in their commitment to put other people’s needs ahead of their own," said the Rev. Ray Klees. "We count on those first responders to be there in our worst moments. We rely on their talent, training and tenacity. We want to recognize their sacrifice and honor them on this important day."

All active and retired firefighters, police officers, paramedics, doctors, nurses and military personnel and flight attendants, as well as their families, are invited to participate in the event. All are encouraged to wear their uniforms or insignia, organizers said.

First responders at the Mass will receive a special blessing and a small religious medallion commemorating their professions' patron saints.

After all of the Masses on Sunday, red and blue ribbons will be distributed in the hopes Edgebrook residents will tie them around trees in the neighborhood to "show support and appreciation for first responders," organizers said.
