WRIGLEYVILLE — "Sod off" might be an insulting demand in Britain, but at Wrigley Field, it's news worth celebrating.

The Chicago Cubs are replacing grass on the ballfield beginning Wednesday. As they've done in years past, the club will make the discarded sod available to fans looking for a special souvenir.

Square, 18-inch sections of sod will be placed in the Toyota Prius parking lot (also known as the Yellow lot) at Waveland and Clifton avenues.

Fans can pick up the sod starting at 9 p.m. Thursday. While the Cubs will leave the grass squares out until Saturday, they'll be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Last year, the squares went pretty quickly.

The team also recommends checking with a lawn care professional for tips on whether the sand-based sod will be suitable for the various soil environments in the area.

The Cubs and Wrigley Field are 95 percent owned by an entity controlled by a trust established for the benefit of the family of Joe Ricketts, owner and CEO of DNAinfo.com. Joe Ricketts has no direct involvement in the management of the iconic team.
