PORTAGE PARK — A 20-year-old man riding a bicycle along Irving Park Road near Marmora Avenue was hit and severely injured Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Witnesses said the bicyclist was headed east on Irving Park Road near the Patio Theater when he was struck and dragged under a red small sport utility vehicle.

The bicyclist was knocked out of his shoes by the impact of the crash. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The crash occurred when the driver of a car parked on the south side of Irving Park Road opened his or her door, forcing the bicyclist into moving traffic, where he was struck and critically injured, said Officer Kevin Quaid, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department.

The driver of the parked car has been cited for having an open door in traffic, Quaid said.

The driver of the car that struck the bicyclist has not been charged and was not at fault in the crash, Quaid said.

There are no bicycle lanes on the stretch of Irving Park where the crash occurred.

Four bicyclists have been killed this year in Chicago.
