THE LOOP — A bicycle police officer was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a Mercedes-Benz in the heart of the Loop, police said.
The police officer was riding a bicycle in the first block of South State Street when the collision occurred, said Officer Kevin Quaid, a Chicago police spokesman. The Sun-Times reported that the incident took place at 2:18 p.m.
The officer was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition and the driver remained on the scene after the incident, Quaid said.
The driver was in a Mercedes-Benz SUV when the officer attempted a U-turn just before the collision, according to a photo of the collision on Imgur.
Quaid was unaware of the driver's vehicle or any citations issued in relation to the incident.
Four bicyclists have been killed this year in Chicago.
