Robert Porter Jr. Killed, Man Wounded in Englewood Shooting, Police Say

By Evan F. Moore | September 5, 2016 10:07am | Updated on September 5, 2016 2:58pm

ENGLEWOOD — An Englewood shooting on Sunday left one man dead and another wounded, police said.

At 5:15 p.m., two men, 45 and 27, were unloading boxes in an alley in the 6700 block of South Green Street when a man dressed in black opened fire, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman.

Robert Porter Jr., 45, who was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, was shot in the torso and chest was taken to Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:02 p.m. Sunday, officials said.

The younger man, who was shot in the chest, back, and right wrist, was taken taken to Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition, Estrada said.

Both men are documented gang members, police said.

Neighbors like James Sharkey, though, said Porter "mostly kept to himself" and was never involved in anything illegal.

He was known around the neighborhood as "CD man," so named for the music he sold out of his car every day, Sharkey said.

"He was a just a really nice guy, a guy who cared about the community," he said. "Most of the time he'd just stay in his house, but sometimes he'd throw parties."

Sharkey was coming home from church Sunday when he saw police tape around his block and quickly learned what happened, he said.

"It was a total surprise — like, what the hell is going on?" Sharkey said. "We're all brothers in this world. I don't know why people are walking around killing each other."

Anna Jackson, a minister at a nearby church, said Porter was a "family man," but did not know if he had children.

"He was always helping people out," Jackson said. "Sometimes he'd give little jobs to some of the men in the community who weren't working."

No one is in custody, police said.

On Monday morning, another two men were shot, one fatally, two blocks away in the 6800 block of South Emerald Avenue.
