BACK OF THE YARDS — Two separate shootings left a man dead and a pregnant woman seriously wounded within an hour of each other in Back of the Yards Monday afternoon, police said.

• First, at 3:18 p.m., a 23-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man were standing on the sidewalk in the 900 block of West 53rd Street when someone walked up and shot at them, according to Officer Michelle Tannehill, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

Both people were brought to Stroger Hospital, Tannehill said. The man was listed in critical condition with a gunshot in his back, and the woman was in serious condition after being shot in her stomach.

Police said the man is a documented gang member.

NBC Chicago reported that the woman was pregnant and undergoing surgery at Stroger.

• At 4 p.m., a 44-year-old man was driving in the 4500 block of South Hermitage Avenue when a group drove up beside him in a white van and began to harass him, Tannehill said.

The man tried to drive away when someone inside the van fired shots, striking him in his head and neck, police said. He then crashed into three parked cars.

The man was brought to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Tannehill said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as Albertano Medrano, of the 1800 block of West 46th Street.

No one is in custody for either shooting, police said.
