Free Before- And After-School Care Among New Programs At Bridgeport Schools

BRIDGEPORT — Classes start Tuesday in Chicago Public Schools, and there are some big staff changes as well as new programs in the Bridgeport Area.

Armor Elementary, 950 W. 33rd Place, will begin offering free before- and after-school care for its students on Sept. 12. Before-school care begins at 7 a.m. and after-school care runs until 5 p.m. every day school is in session. The care program will run weekdays until the last week of June.

At Healy Elementary, 3010 S. Parnell Ave., Elizabeth Nessner, the school's former assistant principal, replaces Alfonso Carmona in the principal's job.

Meanwhile, there have been some changes at neighborhood Catholic schools too.

De La Salle Institute, 3434 S. Michigan Ave. There's a new principal this year. Diane Brown has worked at De La Salle since 1987. Previously head of the De La Salle English department and the school's interim principal, Brown holds a bachelor's degree in English from Western Illinois University and a master's degree in English literature (1994).

At Santa Lucia, 3017 S. Wells St., Eileen Sheedy has taken over as principal. She served six years as kindergarten teacher at St. Louis de Montfort in Oak Lawn and four years as assistant principal.
