PORTAGE PARK — Runners decked out in their finest tutus will take to the streets of Six Corners to raise money for arts programs in Chicago's schools, organizers said.

Hosted by the Chicago Ballet Center, the second annual Tutu Trot will offer a family friendly one-kilometer loop, a five-kilometer course and a 10-kilometer run, said Paul Abrahamson, the director of the center.

The race will step off at 9 a.m. Sept. 19 at 4041 N. Milwaukee Ave., in front of the Chicago Ballet Center's new home in the Six Corners Shopping District, where classes started Aug. 29. The center held classes around the corner beginning in fall 2014, when it moved from Logan Square.

Arts programs have been cut at schools across the city as Chicago Public Schools officials work to close a $1 billion budget deficit.

Runners are strongly encouraged to wear a tutu — but pointe shoes are better left at home, organizers said.

Registration for the race is available online and on the day of the race. Participants will get an official race T-shirt, organizers said.

The cost for the 5K run is $25, while the 10K race is $40 and the family 1K loop is $65 for four runners.
