EDGEWATER — Since 1904, travelers, mourners and everyday community members have been stopping by one of Chicago's oldest restaurant and saloons: Fireside Restaurant in Edgewater.

The business has been owned by Richard Wohn since 1989, but in June the long-running bar was quietly sold to Ratchadamart Fletcher, property records show.

The late-June sale shows Fletcher paid $935,000 for the 5739 N. Ravenswood Ave. property.

A marketing manager for the restaurant Wednesday said she didn't yet have specifics on the new ownership.

Wohn and Fletcher could not be reached for comment.

Fireside has continuously operated since opening as one of the first saloons in the area, the Edgewater Historical Society points out.

In its early days, the watering hole served as a central food and lodging stop for visitors heading to Rosehill Cemetery as well as salesmen and farmers headed north. Some have said the bar is haunted, or at least attracts spirits from their final resting place nearby.

Over the years, the two buildings that make up the property were connected, an entrance and outdoor patio was added and the diner's food and drink menu expanded.
