BUCKTOWN — In an effort to encourage children to use The 606 to get to and from school, planners from The Trust for Public Land will be giving away free pencil cases next Tuesday at all ramps leading up to the elevated Bloomingdale Trail.

The "Walk & Roll to School" event runs from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Tuesday, which is the first day back for all Chicago Public School students.

Nine schools — a mix of CPS, private and parochial — are located within a few blocks of the elevated Bloomingdale Trail and another 12 are within a half-mile, according to a map.

The 2.7-mile-long trail has 12 access point ramps (see map here), four of which are located on ground-level parks: Churchill Park, 1825 N. Damen Ave.; Park 567, 1805 N. Milwaukee Ave.; Walsh Park, 1722 N. Ashland Ave.; Julia de Burgos, 1805 N. Albany Ave.

Schools closest to the trail include:

Burr Elementary School, 1621 W. Wabansia Ave.

St. Mary of the Angels, 1810 N. Hermitage Ave.

Drummond Montessori, 1845 W. Cortland St;

Humboldt Community Christian School, 1847 N. Humboldt Blvd.
