AUBURN GRESHAM — Jamarh Carter, 22, died a day after being shot in the back of his head in Auburn Gresham Monday night, officials said.

At 8:55 p.m. Monday, Carter was sitting in a car with another person in the 8000 block of South May Street in Auburn Gresham when an acquaintance got into the back seat and shot him in the back of his head, police said.

The shooter tried to take control of the car and drive away, but the other person pulled the shooter out of the car and drove Carter to Little Company of Mary Hospital.

Carter was transferred to Stroger Hospital, where he was considered "stable," police said.

Carter, of the 13000 block of South King Drive, was pronounced dead at 5:17 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police said he was a documented gang member, and the other person in the car did not cooperate with authorities.

No one is in custody, police said.
