UPTOWN — A thief didn't get far before crashing the car he stole into an Uptown "people spot" over the weekend, police said.

Around 8 p.m. Sunday, the stolen car crashed into a tree in the 4500 block of North Malden Street, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

The area is known as the Sunnyside Mall, a pedestrian-friendly plaza with benches and trees located on a quiet Uptown street.

Police had little information about the incident, but said there were no injuries or arrests following the crash. Neighbors said they spotted the driver running away from the scene.

The car was allegedly stolen from a deliver driver at Godfather's Famous Pizza, at 1265 N. Wilson Ave., according to the Graceland Wilson Neighbors Association.

The restaurant was not immediately available to comment on the incident.
