ENGLEWOOD — Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined Chicago Department of Fleet and Facility Management Commissioner David Reynolds Monday to announce that the department's headquarters will move to Englewood.

Emanuel said that the new location will "be a facility better suited for the department's need [and] will help to foster continued economic development on the South Side, while improving the City’s operations."

“This announcement is the latest example of our efforts to revitalize the South Side with community investments that will have long-term benefits for residents," he said.

The current location, at 1685 N. Throop St., and its equipment maintenance facility will move operations and 200 existing jobs to Englewood.

The city will begin the process to sell its current building to a private developer. The facility will be relocated to 6700 S. Wentworth Ave., the old Kennedy-King College site. It will need to be constructed by the same developer of the current location as part of the sale transaction.

The new location will include educational opportunities for residents at the new campus, city officials said.

The Englewood Square development includes a Whole Foods, which opens Sept. 28. To help create more economic development in the area, the Department of Planning and Development plans to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for retail and commercial use of the land east of the Wentworth parcel.

Ald. Roderick Sawyer (6th) supports the move.

"This new facility will create construction jobs, and the relocation of hundreds of full-time workers to this community will help attract even more businesses to the neighborhood," he said.
