DOWNTOWN — Pret a Manger is opening a new store this week in the Loop, and it's giving out free food to celebrate.

The grab-and-go sandwich shop will officially open its ninth Chicago store at 6 a.m. Friday next to Simply Thalia in the Pedway level of Block 37, 108 N. State St., a company spokeswoman said.

And Pret a Manger, a London-based chain, is handing out free food the day before.

The first 400 customers to arrive from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday will receive free breakfast, and the first 800 customers from noon to 2 p.m. will get a free lunch, the spokeswoman said.

The free breakfast will consist of one breakfast item (example: yogurt, croissants) and a drink, while lunch will include a sandwich, wrap or salad with a drink while supplies last.

Pret a Manger serves sandwiches, baguettes and soup, among other items. The Block 37 restaurant is filling a previously vacant storefront. It will be open from 6 a.m.-9 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sundays.
