CHICAGO — A man who claimed to be robbed and shot at Navy Pier over the weekend actually made the whole thing up, police said.

Though initially thought to be a robbery, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said on Twitter Saturday that police now believe the man shot himself in the leg.

The man, identified by the Cook County Sheriff as Jimmy E. Moore, 22, was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun. He was ordered held on a $100,000 bond.

Moore initially told police that he was walking down the street in the 600 block of East Illinois Street at 2:20 a.m. Saturday when someone walked up to him, took out a gun and said he was robbing the man, police said.

The man refused to comply with the robber, so the robber shot the man in his leg and then ran off, police said of the initial report.

Guiglielmi said that after a review of the physical evidence and surveillance, police determined the victim who said he was shot and robbed near Navy Pier actually shot himself.

The man was taken to Northwestern Hospital, where his condition was not available but he was listed as "stable," police said.

No word on whether Moore's robbery story was inspired by Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte's false robbery claim in Rio, which has made headlines for weeks.
