CHICAGO — Time to start thinking about your Halloween costume. But these these classic Chicago costume stores think about it year-round:

Chicago Costume Company (Lincoln Park, Portage Park): In business since 1976, this store is known for its wide assortment of props, including an impressive amount of fake swords, according to Yelp reviews. Customers are advised to go well in advance of Halloween, as the store is mobbed right before the holiday. (1120 W. Fullerton Ave. and 4727 W. Montrose Ave.)

Beatnix (Boystown): This Boystown classic specializes in gay and queer-leaning get-ups, but thrifty shoppers can find a great deal on a unique costume. (3400 N Halsted St.)

Fantasy Costumes (Portage Park): Considered by Yelp reviewers to have the best and biggest selection in the city. Close to Halloween, the store stays open 24 hours. (4065 N. Milwaukee Ave.)

Broadway Costumes (Pilsen): Looking for a get-up that looks less like a plastic Halloween costume and more like a period piece? Head to Broadway Costumes, which was established in 1886 and has been outfitting plays and movie productions as well as hard-core Halloween fans ever since. (1120 W. Cermak Rd.)

Lost Eras Costumes & Props (Rogers Park): Specializing in vintage and historic pieces, this is the place to stop if you're looking to dress from a bygone time. (1511 W. Howard St.)
