State Police Shoot Two Men In Taxi When One Reaches For Gun, Police Say

By Kelly Bauer | August 26, 2016 8:48am

CHICAGO — State Police shot and wounded two men Thursday night in Grand Crossing after one man reached for a gun as troopers tried to mitigate a fare dispute, officials said.

About 8:30 p.m., the troopers were at 77th Street and Vincennes Avenue when a taxi driver flagged them down, according to a State Police news release. The driver said two men in his backseat were refusing to pay their fare.

The officers spoke with the men and saw one of them appeared to have a gun in his pocket, State Police said. The man didn't listen to the officer and then pulled a gun out of his pocket, police said.

The man was ordered to drop the gun but he did not, State Police said. One officer fired shots, hitting the man with the gun twice in the lower part of his torso, police said. The other man in the backseat was hit in his toe.

The men were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening wounds, police said. One man, 23, was treated and released and was in police custody. The other man, 25, was at Stroger Hospital, where his condition was not available but he was listed as "stable," police said.

No officers were wounded in the incident, and a loaded semi-automatic gun was found at the scene, police said.

Less than a week ago, State Police shot a juvenile boy in Chinatown.
