UPTOWN — After more than eight months of renovations after a fire at Weiss Plaza, KFC will reopen in the plaza Saturday, according to a sign on the restaurant.

The restaurant was one of three businesses damaged when a fire struck the strip mall in the 4800 block of North Sheridan Road in December. Nhu Lan, 4810 N. Sheridan Road, and H&R Block were also damaged and boarded up as a result of the fire.

The blaze began in the Nhu Lan kitchen around 2 p.m. Dec. 20. The front of the restaurant suffered from smoke and water damage, but the fire was mostly contained in the kitchen, according to its owner Lee Tran.

There was no serious damage or injuries, the Chicago Fire Department said at the time.

Tran said the restaurant hoped to open within two months of the fire.

An employee from Nhu Lan's other location at 2612 W. Lawrence Ave., said the Uptown location was still a few weeks away from reopening.
