CHICAGO — PAWS Chicago is sending a team to Louisiana to rescue pets from flood-ravaged areas.

The Lincoln Park shelter will send veterinarians and volunteers to the state this week to bring home dozens of pets who are in need of care and homes. They plan to give priority to pets who were given up by owners or who had been in shelters before the floods, according to a PAWS Chicago news release.

On Friday, PAWS Chicago's team will bring the pets back to Chicago, where they'll receive medical care, vaccinations, be given microchips and will be spayed or neutered. The dogs and cats will be put up for adoption once they're well.

In the meantime, PAWS Chicago will need foster homes and supplies to care for the animals, according to the shelter. Supporters can donate online. Information about fostering pets is also available online.

Tens of thousands of people have been affected by deadly flooding in southern Louisiana in recent days.
