WEST TOWN — Got a desire to beat a local brewer in ping pong? Or just to play ping pong?

Forbidden Root, a botanic brewing company and restaurant in West Town's old Hub Theater, has announced its first "Ping Pong Night" and a little known fact: its founder and "rootmaster" Robert Finkel claims to be a Ping Pong "Master," a ranking that is one step above an expert and just below National Table Tennis team status.

Set for 8 to 11 p.m. Wednesday at 1746 W. Chicago Ave., Forbidden Root will replace half of its chairs and dining tables with ping pong tables for a night of "friendly" competition.

Several Forbidden Root beers will be available for $5 throughout the event and there will be additional tables slotted for open play, for those who are not up to challenging Finkel.

The event is free to participate and there will chances to win Forbidden Root merchandise, too.

"Find your mouth guard and get your paddle ready," the brewpub posted on its Facebook page.
