MORGAN PARK — Writer Mike "Houli" Houlihan will show his 2013 comic documentary “Our Irish Cousins” at dusk on Sept. 10 in Kennedy Park.
The showing at 11320 S. Western Ave. in Morgan Park is free and all ages are welcome. The 99-minute movie received a three-star review from RogerEbert.com.
According to the review, the film is based on Houlihan's columns in the Irish American News, which includes "stories, anecdotes and tall tales largely inspired by his experiences growing up as the seventh child of a South Side Irish-Catholic family."
Houlihan compiled his favorite columns into an anthology called "Hooliganism" in 2008. The movie "Our Irish Cousins" follows him as he sets out to promote the book both in Chicago and Ireland.
"While the crowds may not be large, they are enthusiastic and, more important, they all seem to have unique perspectives on what it means to be Irish-American and are willing to share them with Houlihan and his camera," reviewer Peter Sobczynski wrote.
The film premiered in March 2013 at the 16th annual European Union Film Festival in Chicago. Houlihan also co-hosts “The Skinny & Houli Show” with James "Skinny" Sheahan, of Morgan Park, on WCEV Radio 1450 AM.
For the last two years, Houlihan has put together an Irish-centric film festival called the “Irish-American Movie Hooley” at The Gene Siskel Film Center.
