2nd Man Charged in Fatal Back Of The Yards Beating

COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — Prosecutors have charged a second man in the April murder of 42-year-old Kimberly Schnackenberg.

The woman was found dead, laying in a pool of blood, in a Back of the Yards alley on April 22. She'd been badly beaten with a baseball bat and kicked multiple times, prosecutors have said.

Authorities believe Eddie Howlett, 24, lured Schnackenberg out of her apartment in the 2000 block of West 51st Street with the promise of drugs — before attacking her with at least three other men.

Howlett was charged in May and ordered held in lieu of $1 million bail.

On Monday, prosecutors identified one of the other attackers as Erik Anderson. He now faces first-degree murder charges.

According to prosecutors, Schnackenberg was a drug addict who received a text from Howlett, her dealer, about 8 p.m. April 21. Howlett allegedly told the woman he had new drugs he wanted her to try.

As Howlett headed to Schnackenberg's apartment that evening, Anderson and at least two accomplices hid in a nearby alley, Assistant State's Attorney Holly Grosshans said during a bond hearing Monday.

Howlett led Schnackenberg to the alley, where he punched her, knocking her to the ground, prosecutors said. That's when Anderson began beating the woman with a baseball bat in her head and body, according to Grosshans.

Surveillance video captured the attack.

After some time, the group fled the alley, leaving Schnackenberg's body behind, prosecutors said. A witness found her in the early morning hours of April 22.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office ruled Schnackenberg's death a homicide and said she died of "craniocerebral injuries from multiple impacts to the head."

Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. on Monday denied Anderson bail.
