CHICAGO —The family of a 58-year-old man who was fatally struck by a van Wednesday night is shocked that anyone would drive away after hitting someone.

"I couldn't figure out how somebody could hit you and then leave," Rose Smith, the sister of the victim, told ABC7.

At 10:19 p.m., Francisco Cruz, 58, was riding a bike when he was hit by a car in the 4000 block of West Maypole Avenue, according to a Chicago Police community alert. The driver drove away west on Maypole Avenue.

Cruz's mother and sister told the news channel that he was biking home from his job when he was struck.

Cruz, of the 1300 block of South Christiana, was pronounced dead at 11 p.m., according to Cook County Medical Examiner's Office records.

NBC reported in a Thursday evening newscast that Cruz was escorting a woman home from work that night, and that he had previously expressed concern to co-workers about his safety when riding a bike on the streets of Chicago.

The van appeared to belong to Advanced Realty Network, which was painted on the outside of the car along with the company's phone number. Company employees did not answer multiple phone calls Thursday, and its office appeared closed and shuttered.

Anyone with information about the car or incident is asked to call police at 312-745-4521.
