BEVERLY — Northbound traffic on Western Avenue in Beverly will continue to see delays through Aug. 26, according to Marci Grossman, a spokeswoman for Peoples Gas.

Grossman said Thursday the first stage of its system overhaul on Western Avenue involves replacing the main supply line. This will require regular street closures on the east side of the roadway from 95th to 99th streets.

Then, smaller traffic delays may be caused for three weeks beginning Aug. 29 as new meters are installed at businesses and residential buildings along this busy stretch in Beverly, Grossman said.

This same two-step process will be repeated in the fall from 99th to 103rd streets on Western Avenue, she said.

This is the latest round of gas line construction in Beverly as aging metal pipes and a low-pressure system are being replaced with plastic gas lines and a medium-pressure system.

Overall, Peoples Gas is in the fifth year of a 20-year plan to make improvements throughout the area. The utility plans to upgrade 2,000 miles of gas lines throughout the Chicago market as the project moves forward.

"We apologize for any inconvenience this causes Chicago residents,” Grossman said.
