ROSELAND — An officer was grazed in his face by a bullet while trying to pull over a car suspected to have been involved in a carjacking in Roseland Tuesday night, police said.

Around 10 p.m., officers were trying to pull over the car in the 600 block of East 100th Place when a man inside it began to shoot at them, grazing one officer in his face with a bullet, according to a police report.

While officers returned fire, the man was not hit, police said. But he crashed the car and tried to run away, police said. He was taken into custody a short time later.

The wounded officer was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center with "non-life threatening injuries."

The shooter's gun was recovered and charges are pending, police said.

The 24-year-old suspect was on parole after spending about three years in prison for attempted armed robbery, the Tribune reported.

"I've been preaching for the last four months that the same individuals, repeat gun offenders, create havoc in our neighborhoods," Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson told reporters Tuesday night outside the hospital. "It just goes to show you again that our people are out here, with all these weapons, and they're not afraid to use them."

He added that officers are "doing what they're supposed to do" but "this just illustrates how dangerous this is."
