After Pregnant Mom Shot, Baby Dies 2 Days After Emergency Birth

By Kelly Bauer | August 17, 2016 4:25pm

CHICAGO — The two-day-old baby of a woman who was shot while pregnant has died, officials said Wednesday, making the infant the year's youngest murder victim.

The woman was shot in her chest during a domestic disturbance Sunday in North Lawndale, police said. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition with her unborn child.

The woman had an emergency cesarean section and the baby was born prematurely. The boy, called Baby Welch in records, was pronounced dead at 5:20 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

An autopsy showed the baby died from complications of extreme prematurity, emergency cesarean section delivery and gunshot wounds to his mother. His death was a homicide, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.

A 38-year-old man was in custody and charges are pending, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a Chicago Police spokesman. Police could not immediately say if the man was related to the woman and baby.
