UPTOWN — Courtenay Language Arts Center will lose a total of 10 staff positions, CPS officials announced.

The Uptown elementary school at 4420 N. Beacon St. will lose eight support staff positions and two teaching positions, according to a staff impact list released by Chicago Public Schools on Friday.

Courtenay's Principal Macquline King could not be reached for comment.

Across the district, nearly 1,000 teachers and support staff positions will be eliminated. The layoffs affect 494 teachers, including 302 at high schools and 192 at elementary schools, which is about 3 percent of the entire teaching staff.

"CPS principals continue to do exemplary work protecting their classrooms so that they can build on the remarkable academic progress their students are making," said CPS spokeswoman Emily Bittner, adding "staffing changes are part of the normal process of school planning, and there are more vacant positions in the District than staff who will be impacted today.”

The school was hit hardest among Uptown schools. McCutcheon Elementary School, 4865 N. Sheridan Road, will lose one support staff position and one teaching position. Brenneman Elementary School, 4251 N. Clarendon Ave. will lose two teaching positions, according to the staff impact list.

Only a handful of schools face more cuts than Courtenay, including Jane Addams School (11); Wells Community Academy High School (12); Carl Schurz High School (13); Harlan Community High School (13); Thomas Kelly High School (14); Gallistel Language Academy (15); Steinmetz College Prep High School (15); and Foreman High School (22).

About 60 percent of laid off teachers in the past have been rehired full-time, CPS officials said.
