BRIDGEPORT — A friend of a neighborhood man who died two days after someone assaulted him in the streets has launched a GoFundMe page to raise money for the man's young son.

"I have been friends with Kristopher Weiss and his family for over 40 years," Christal Tobar wrote. "I am starting a fund for Kris' boy smiley Mike. Mikey will need it in his teen years. Kristopher was taken from his family by a brutal attack."

Just before midnight July 22, emergency crews rolled into the 3000 block of South Normal and found 45-year-old Kristopher Weiss with a severe head injury, Chicago Police said.

Weiss had been in a fight with another man who punched him in his face, police said. Weiss fell backward and hit his head on the pavement.

The man drove away in a black pickup truck, police said. No one is in custody, and police are still investigating.

An ambulance took Weiss to Stroger Hospital, where he died from his injuries two days later on July 24, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy did not reveal the cause of death.

Weiss' family held his funeral Monday at All Saints-St. Anthony's Church in Bridgeport.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the GoFundMe campaign had raised $2,225 of its $5,000 goal.

"Kris was an impeccable man and friend," Lanedra Hubbard wrote in an online guest book. "I could always leave it to him to make me laugh. Kris will truly be missed."
