WEST RIDGE — The Indo-American Heritage Museum will celebrate the induction of Vijay Iyer into its hall of fame with a gala in September.
The fundraising gala, which will feature performances by Iver and guitarist Fareed Haque, will benefit the museum, at 6238 N. California Ave. The museum honors the heritage and contributions of Americans of Asian-Indian origin.
“This concert is a historic event for the Indian-American community of Chicago," said event chair Amita Banerji. "IAHM is the first institution in the country to engage with all communities to promote understanding, document the history, celebrate the heritage, preserve and share the contributions of Indian Americans to the building of America."
Iyer was born in New York and raised by Indian Tamil immigrants. In 2013, he received a MacArthur Fellowship, which "celebrates creative potential of individuals through a no-strings-attached" grant.
Haque is a guitarist who spent long stays in Asia, Europe and South America, exposing him to global music from a young age. In 2009, he was voted Best World Guitarist by Guitar Player Magazine, according to the release.
"Through the creation of a Hall of Fame we will honor Indian Americans whose achievements are particularly noteworthy,” said Banerji. “We are especially honored that two noted jazz artists Vijay Iyer and Fareed Haque have accepted our invitation to perform this Gala concert which will inaugurate our newly announced Hall of Fame.”
The gala will be held at 3 p.m. on Sept. 18 in the Mary Galvin Recital Hall at Northwestern University, 70 Arts Circle Dr., in Evanston.
Tickets for the event range from $45-100 and include preferred seating, general admission and balcony seating options. Tickets can be purchased here.
