LOGAN SQUARE — The owners of Sunrise Fresh Market on Milwaukee Avenue unexpectedly closed the grocery store this week.

While the store's shelves have been relatively sparse over the last few years, there was no announcement of its actual closing before workers papered up the windows.

Sunrise Fresh Market, 2722 N. Milwaukee Ave., shut down for good Tuesday and was packing up items Wednesday to clear out the store.

A woman who answered the phone at VPRE Holdings, the company that owns the building, said the closure came as a surprise to the building owner.

The owner of the building was not notified, and learned the grocer was moving out when the business began putting paper over the windows along Milwaukee Avenue, according to the VPRE Holdings employee who declined to give her name.

No one with Sunrise Fresh Market could be reached for comment.

The location is one block away from the future Dill Pickle Food Co-Op, which is slated to open in 2017 pending a fundraising effort that is underway.

The food co-op had planned to open its new location, six-times the size of the current Dill Pickle on Fullerton, earlier this year, but the fundraising effort has been slower than expected.
