WEST ELSDON — A 20-year-old man died hours after being shot on the Southwest Side early Sunday morning, officials said.

At 2:10 a.m., the man was driving in the 5500 block of West Kostner Avenue in West Elsdon, about three blocks from Midway Airport, when someone pulled up alongside him in a black sedan and fired shots, police said.

The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition with gunshot wounds in his back, police said.

The man, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as Jesus Martinez, of the 5700 block of South Kilbourn Avenue, was declared dead just before 8 a.m.

Police said the man was a documented gang member.
